What lies the fate of students in Nigeria, as the ongoing strike seems not to end soon as there’s been accusations and counter-accusations between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Recently, the Lagos Zone Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has faulted Chris Ngige the Minister; Labour and Employment who said that the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is because the union is against the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and the striking lectures are being paid in full despite not discharging their duties.

The Lagos Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in a bit to clear the air and inform the general public why the strike is ongoing said “the reason of the strike goes far back to 2009 agreement between Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Federal Government of Nigeria. He said that the Government has not been able to implement the Memorandum of Action within the stipulated timelines as agreed in the 2009 Agreement. Other issues are the non-release of funds for the revitalization of infrastructure in Universities, nonpayment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowances, non-set-up of visitation panels to Federal Universities and state universities and non-conclusion of the renegotiation of 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

From the above, the issues goes beyond the IPPIS as we as a body have built our UTA that has captured the peculiarities of universities. With this in view, we want the Federal Government of Nigeria to do the needful so students can return to school soonest.
