The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) has come to be synonymous to strike. In fact, once many Nigerian people hear the name ASUU, what comes to mind next is that Nigerian public universities are about to embark on another industrial action due to seeming disagreements with the government on issues affecting the ASUU members and in some cases, students welfare.

Perhaps this explains why there’s been little or no surprise that ASUU has embarked on one of their powerful negotiating tools by embarking on an eight month strike which was reportedly called off last night. Many felt the news that the strike has been called off was not a good one as many students do not want to resume back to school this year while others are of the opinion that resumption was long overdue.

But a quick fact-checking mission done both online (ASUU’s official twitter account) and on major news house media shows that this information could be a bit too early. While the striking lecturers are close to reaching an agreement with the Federal Government having been reportedly offered 70bn, the strike cannot be said to be called off already.

The reason for this is because, as of this morning (6am), there has been no words or updates on the suspension of the strike by the National President of the Union, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi. Another reason why we can’t say the strike has been called off is because in times past, the Union often consult with it’s member and conduct a congress on whether there should be a continuation of the strike or not.

So, we hope that in few days time, the striking lecturers will come together and put an end to this lingering strike which has paralyzed education in the Nigerian public universities for the past 8 months.
