Primary and secondary schools in Abia State would resume on January 11, 2021, for the continuation of first term 2020/2021 academic session, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Kanelechi Nwangwa, has said.
Nwangwa told newsmen yesterday in Umuahia that following the new wave of COVID-19, school heads and proprietors had been directed to ensure that safety guidelines are observed in school premises. He said the first term would officially end on Wednesday, February 10, 2021.
In a related development, the Akwa Ibom State Government has emphasized that schools in the state would resume January 4, 2021, despite the spike in COVID-19 infection.
Speaking yesterday in Uyo after the State Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Ini Ememobong, explained that the early resumption was to prevent a disruption in the academic calendar as the first term was due to end on January 23, 2021.
He said the government has directed the Commissioner of Education to ensure that all schools adhere to the COVID-19 preventive guidelines.
