As the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) gets set to tackle erring members, the University of Lagos Chapter of the union has resolved to punish 240 erring members who flouted the union’s directive and enrolled on IPPIS.
The ASUU-UNILAG in its Congress held on the 29th of December, 2020, unanimously resolved never to trust, advance, protect or defend the interest of any of such members in any position within the University. This, the Union said is because “they cannot be trusted with any position of responsibilities.”
Recall that on the introduction of the Integrated Personnel Payment
Information System (IPPIS) by the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) mounted a
a vigorous campaign against the system.
According to a statement by the Union, its opposition to the system was based on the fact that; “(I) IPPIS violates and seeks to reverse the gains of our union’s decades struggle for university autonomy in a brazenly reckless manner, and (ii) The failure of the IPPIS to capture the peculiarities of the Nigerian university system, thereby posing a further danger to an already the traumatized and bastardized university system in Nigeria.”
The statement reads, “The National leadership of our great union directed all members of ASUU in federal universities not to enroll on the IPPIS platform in conformity with a carefully considered and publicized decision of the National Executive Council (NEC) of our great union, despite the insistence of the Federal Government to forcefully and illegally enroll our members on the IPPIS platform in a most unconscionable manner, through blackmail, coercion, and threat not to pay salaries of our members who refused to enroll on the IPPIS platform.
“In line with the Constitution and Code of Practice of our union and in tandem with the extant traditions of our union, NEC decisions are sacrosanct, inviolable and must be obeyed unconditionally by all members of the union at all times irrespective of their personal disposition to the contrary. It, therefore, goes without saying, that members have no choice on whether or not to obey any decisions of NEC.
Flowing from the above, therefore, failure or refusal to obey NEC directives by any member or group of members, especially when it has to do with directive against the attempt by authorities; be it government or university administrations, to strangulate our union and members, will amount to act of sabotage, misconduct, indiscipline, disloyalty, and betrayal by members complicit in such actions.
“In view of the foregoing and based on a duly moved motion by Prof. Ngozi Osarenren and seconded by Dr. Ganiyu Oyetibo at the congress held on the 29th of December, 2020, the under listed members of our branch except those in an official capacity who knowingly, deliberately, consciously and willfully disregarded the directive of ASUU NEC by enrolling on the IPPIS platform have by their action(s) exhibited acts of gross misconducts, indiscipline, disloyalty, and betrayal of the collective aspiration of our union and our members nationwide.
ASUU-UNILAG said it is a consequence of their actions and the implications as described above that the congress unanimously resolved on the 29th of December, 2020 that the 240 underlisted members of ASUU-UNILAG cannot be trusted to advance, protect and defend the interest of members of ASUU-UNILAG in any position within the University.
Hence the under listed members shall therefore not enjoy the support and votes of members of ASUU-UNILAG in any election (s) they stand for now or in the future.
Members are hereby enjoined not to vote for any of the undersigned members who went against the directive of the union on by enrolling on IPPIS should they stand for any elective position now or in future.” the statement added.
