The hope for the safe reopening of schools nationwide despite the current Covid-19 crisis was rekindled on Wednesday, September 23, as the representatives of the Ministry of Education met with all the seven governors from the northwest region.

The meeting, which was held in Kano state, was channeled towards the prompt adoption of the already developed federal government’s template for the safe reopening of schools.

Speaking during the meeting, minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said the templates required full engagement of all stakeholders for successful implementation.

The minister further stated that the template of the federal government also shared some key roles and responsibilities for the stakeholders at the national, state, LGA and school levels.

Speaking after the meeting in a statement released by his chief press secretary Hassan Musa Fagge, the Kano deputy governor commend the federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari for putting various measures in place towards school reopening.

Gawuna said the Ganduje-led Kano government has also released N880 million for the renovation of some schools across the state.

He stated that as part of the reopening, the state government has also commenced the fumigation exercise and bought protective equipment for the teachers and students.

Gawuma also noted that the Kano government is extremely committed to the education sector of the state, further submitting that Governor Ganduje and his cabinet will work closely with the federal government to ensure that schools are safely reopened.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) gave this directive in a memo addressed to the vice-chancellors of universities in Nigeria on Tuesday, September 22.

While addressing journalists in Abuja, Chris Maiyaki, director of the executive secretary office of NUC, said the resumption arrangements must be in line with the safety protocols of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
