Following the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) call to seek a referendum to determine Nigeria’s continued existence, the Yoruba Summit Group (YSG) has drummed support for the northern group, The Guardian reports.

Murtala Aliyu, the ACF secretary-general who made this known in a recent interview said the north was not afraid of restructuring but preferred a referendum.

Aliyu went on to note that if Nigeria’s existence was no more desirable various parts of the country could go their different ways.

The Yoruba group made its position known on Wednesday, October 28, in a communiqué signed by its spokesman, Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo.

Adejumo said the YSG aligns with the position of the ACF and others calling for a referendum.

Speaking further, the group explained that it was illogical to be talking about an election now when Nigeria is faced with problems that require urgent solution.

The people said that they should have their own administrative units within the proposed region.

In a related development, as the call for Oduduwa Republic continues to grow, Chief Bisi Akande, a former governor of Osun, has called on agitators to bury such thought.

Akande who is the pioneer interim chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) made the appeal on Monday, September 28, in Ibadan. He said allowing Yoruba to break away from Nigeria might lead to bloodshed and avoidable civil war that would further decimate the people.
